Chimney Inspections in La Grange, IL
A chimney inspection tells you whether your chimney is safe to use — before a hidden crack, blockage, or worn liner turns into a fire or a carbon monoxide problem. We perform Level 1 and Level 2 inspections with photos and a clear report.
Overview
Why an inspection matters
A chimney inspection is a documented safety check of the parts you can't easily see: the flue liner, the masonry, the crown and cap, the damper, and the connection to your appliance. It catches the problems that cause house fires and carbon monoxide leaks — a cracked clay liner, gaps in the mortar, creosote glaze, or a blockage from a nest or fallen debris. The national standard (NFPA 211) calls for a chimney inspection at least once a year.
The Three Levels
Which inspection do you need?
Level 1
For a chimney in regular use with no known problems. We visually check the readily accessible interior and exterior and the flue. Included with a standard sweep.
Level 2
Required when you buy or sell a home, after a chimney fire or weather event, or when you change the appliance or liner. Adds a video scan of the flue and a look at accessible attic and crawl spaces.
Level 3
For serious suspected hazards that need parts of the structure opened up to inspect. We will tell you honestly if a situation calls for this — it is uncommon.
When To Book
Common reasons homeowners call
- Buying or selling a home with a fireplace (a Level 2 is the standard here)
- After a chimney fire, earthquake, or major storm
- Before switching to a new stove, insert, or gas appliance
- Staining, a musty smell, or water in the firebox
- You've never had the chimney checked and want to know it's safe
FAQ
Common questions
How often should I have my chimney inspected?
At least once a year, per NFPA 211, even if you don't use the fireplace often. Annual inspection catches liner cracks, blockages, and water damage before they become dangerous or expensive.
What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 inspection?
A Level 1 is a visual check for a chimney in normal use with no known issues. A Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue and is required for home sales, after a chimney fire, or when you change the appliance or liner.
Do I need a Level 2 inspection to sell my house?
Yes, in almost all cases. A real estate transaction is one of the situations NFPA 211 specifically calls for a Level 2 inspection, because the new owner needs a documented look at the flue.
Will you show me what you find?
Always. We take photos during the inspection and walk you through them in plain language, then give you a written summary and a price up front for any recommended work.
How much does a chimney inspection cost?
It depends on the level and the chimney. We quote the price before we start — see our pricing page for what affects the cost, and call (708) 432-5330 for a quote.
Do you inspect chimneys you didn't sweep?
Yes. We're glad to perform a standalone inspection whether or not we did the sweeping, including pre-purchase Level 2 inspections.
