A chimney cap is one of the cheapest parts of your chimney and one of the most important. This small metal cover keeps rain, animals and burning embers from moving through the top of your flue, and in Hodgkins that matters year round because tree cover and damp river air are hard on an open chimney top.
Yet caps are also the part homeowners forget. Many of the chimneys we open in Hodgkins have no cap at all, or one that rusted through years ago. Here is how to choose a good one and know when it is time to replace what you have.
What a chimney cap actually does
A cap sits over the flue opening and does three jobs at once. It stops rain and snow from pouring straight down onto your damper and smoke shelf, it blocks birds, squirrels and raccoons from nesting inside, and its mesh sides act as a spark arrestor so hot embers do not land on your roof. A chimney without a cap is open to all three problems.
Single-flue, multi-flue and full-width covers
The right style depends on your chimney. A single-flue cap clamps or bolts onto one exposed flue tile. A multi-flue cap covers several flues under one lid bolted to the crown. A full-width or outside-mount cover protects the entire top and is a good choice when the crown itself is cracked and needs shielding.
- Single-flue cap: one exposed clay or metal flue
- Multi-flue cap: two or more flues on a shared crown
- Full-width cover: protects the whole crown and top course of brick
Which material to buy
Galvanized steel is the cheapest but rusts within a few Illinois winters. Aluminum resists rust but dents easily. Stainless steel is the sweet spot for most homes and usually carries a lifetime warranty. Copper is the premium choice and ages to a handsome patina. For Hodgkins weather we almost always recommend stainless.
Signs your cap needs replacing
Walk to a window with a clear view of your chimney, or check after a storm. Rust streaks on the brick, a cap sitting crooked, torn or missing mesh, or water and animal noises inside the flue all point to a cap that has failed. Any of these is worth a quick look before the heating season.
If your cap is rusted, missing or letting rain in, our chimney sweep service in Hodgkins can measure your flue and fit a stainless cap that lasts.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a chimney cap?
Yes. A cap keeps out water, animals and embers. Without one, water damage and animal nests are far more likely and repairs cost much more than the cap.
What size cap do I need?
It depends on your flue dimensions and whether you have one flue or several. We measure on site so the cap fits snugly and does not blow off in wind.
Is stainless steel worth the extra cost?
For our climate, yes. Stainless resists rust for decades and usually carries a lifetime warranty, so it outlasts several cheaper galvanized caps.
Can you install a cap during a routine sweep?
Often yes. If we have the right size on the truck we can fit it during the same visit, otherwise we order the correct cap and return.
