What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is removing old, failed mortar from between the bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It restores the joints that keep water out and hold the chimney together, and it's one of the most common chimney repairs.
Why does my chimney brick keep flaking?
That's spalling — water soaks into the brick, freezes, and pops the face off. It means water is getting in, so the fix is to replace the damaged brick and address the source, usually the crown, cap, or missing waterproofing.
Can you fix a leaking chimney?
Yes. Chimney leaks usually trace back to a cracked crown, a missing cap, failed flashing at the roofline, or porous masonry. We find the actual source and repair it — sealing the top without fixing the cause won't last.
Is a little cracked mortar really a problem?
It can be. Small mortar gaps let water in, and water is what drives nearly all chimney masonry failure here. Repointing early is inexpensive compared with rebuilding a chimney that's been soaking for years.
